They connect shell commands, TUI panels, and process output to the harness, so a session can run something and read the result. Some are read-only wrappers around a single tool, while others can execute arbitrary commands.
Yes, and for several of them that is the entire point. Read the confirmation behavior documented in the repository before installing, and do not give a shell-capable plugin access to a machine holding credentials or production access.

The harness process usually has a different environment: your interactive shell profile is not sourced, PATH differs, and there is no TTY. Print the environment from inside the plugin before concluding the command itself is broken.
Compare which shells and terminal emulators each repository claims to support, then check the last commit date. Terminal integrations break with upstream shell and library updates faster than most other categories here.
