How the plugin authenticates, where those credentials live, what target scope it accepts, and whether a target can come from content it reads rather than from you. A plugin that takes a host from untrusted input is disqualifying.
Yes: use a dedicated low-privilege account on the target, a host you can rebuild from scratch, and credentials shared with nothing else. Test against a throwaway instance before pointing it at anything that matters.
Less than anywhere else on this site. A popular remote execution plugin with stale commits is a worse choice than an unpopular one that still patches its transport and dependencies.
Assume the remote side is in an unknown state until you check it directly rather than trusting the plugin's own report. Prefer plugins whose operations are idempotent, so a repeat run cannot compound the damage.
